Zoran Djindjic was born on August 1st 1952 in Bosanski Šamac. He graduated from Belgrade University’s Philosophy Faculty in 1974. He spent the period between 1977 and 1990 in Germany at a number of universities and social sciences institutions in Konstanz, Bonn and Frankfurt. He received his doctorate at the University of Konstanz in 1979, where he worked as an assistant lecturer.

He was one of the founders of the Democratic Party and served as President of the Executive Board from September 1990, and as President of the Party from January 1994. He was a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Philosophy and Social Theory, member of all three multiparty sessions of the National Parliament of the Republic of Serbia and of the Council of the Republics in the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
